Melbourne - Darwin - Perth Challenge
About a year ago Paraplegic & Speaker Andreas Dagelet phoned Paraplegic & Speaker Dale Elliott and said "How would you like to ride from Melbourne to Darwin on a Handcycle?". Dale said "Sure... What's a Handcycle?" And thus the project was born.
We combined two concepts... To impact as many children as possible and to raise an awareness of disability.
We discovered the perfect match for our idea in the form of a project in africa to help cure infants of clubfoot (Cure Clubfoot Worldwide - CCW) and we partnered with an Australian charity called 'African Equity', an NGO which gives us 100% tax deductible donations and absolutely no administration costs. With these partners we are able to get a child walking for just $200!
"Clubfoot effects 1 in 750 children worldwide. In Africa most children never receive treatment, for just $200 a child can walk for the rest of their life!."
Clubfoot is a condition that is easily treatable at birth. Unfortunately, more than 200,000 babies will be born with clubfoot this year in the developing world and will not receive the treatment they need. With your help and just $200, we can cure clubfoot and make sure that many disabled children get the cure they need before surgery is their only option. If caught before a child is 2 years old, we can treat clubfoot with a series of casts -- avoiding surgery and the pain of growing up with crooked feet. We hope to expand this program into 100 countries over the next ten years and you can help us eradicate clubfoot from the planet!
Over the first 5 months Andreas, Dale and the crew handcycled 5000km from Melbourne to Darwin visiting schools, clubs and communities along the way to spread their message of hope and possibility to young Australians and encourage them connect with needy children in other countries through journey's of hope like this one. Now they have reached Darwin Andreas has decided to ride on a further 5000km to Perth while Dale has returned to his wife and son in Adelaide. He will remain an important member of the team by supporting us from his Adelaide base.
We encourage schools and community groups to engage in this project by raising money. Every $200 raised will cure 1 child and we hope to raise enough money to cure 1000 children. So far we have helped over 250 kids to walk!
Thanks for sharing our dream of getting these kids walking.
Andreas and the ER team.
